Baton Rouge
The capital of Louisiana and a combined City-Parish, Baton Rouge bursts with rich Louisiana culture, heritage and food. It boasts two major universities, booming petro-chemical, construction and healthcare industries, a major biomedical research center and a plethora of cultural festivals, Cajun restaurants and historical sites.
In 2010-2011, City Hall Fellows deployed a 6-Fellow cohort to Baton Rouge. Their mission: help Baton Rouge get closer to its goal of becoming “America’s next great city.” The Fellows tackled projects ranging from increasing local volunteerism to preventing hurricane and flood damage. They designed new juvenile offender rehabilitation programs, kicked-off an upgrade to the city’s decades-old financial management system and helped develop a plan for attracting more young talent to the greater Baton Rouge metropolitan area.
“Baton Rouge supports City Hall Fellows because of the program’s ability to attract and retain recent college graduates while developing their abilities as local citizen leaders.”
– Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden
